FORT MYERS, Fla. - Guilty: that's the verdict of a Lee County jury in the case against Luis Gonzalez. He's the man accused of running over Tia Poklemba and leaving her to die on a San Carlos Park Street back in 2008.
Gonzalez is guilty of manslaughter. He spent more than 4 years on the run in Mexico.
This case is a nightmare has plagued Poklemba's family who says they are pleased with today's verdict.
The prosecution says Gonzalez met Poklemba at a south Lee County bar and the two left together. A short time later, she lay dying in the middle of San Carlos Park Street. Investigators say she was run over at least 3 times.
During the trial, Gonzalez took the stand in his own defense. He testified saying two men who were friends of Poklemba forced him out of his 2005 cadillac.
"One of them hits me," Gonzalez said. "They punch me in the stomach and then from there they push me and they take the car."
He said he didn't see them or Poklemba again. The jury didn't buy it.
With the guilty verdict, Gonzalez could spend up to 60 years behind bars.
