COLLIER COUNTY, Fla.- Parents are calling for change. They are furious after a cell phone tower was installed near their kid's schools.
The tower is in the parking lot at Poinciana Elementary School. Neighbors and parents say it was done without any warning.
Parents say a 75-foot tall tower will cause long term health problems if it remains on this campus. They're passing out flyers hoping the district will move this cell phone tower to another location. The school district says they had no objection and it complies with county rules.
"My home overnight has changed from a place of comfort and peace, to a place of fear," said nearby resident, Ellen Goldman.
Emotions are running high for a community who says they were blind-sided when this 75-foot cell phone tower went up over night. They say it was a project that was done with out warning and without notice.
"I'm horrified just to think they would put a cell phone tower so close to the school and so close to our home," said Goldman.
But according to the school district some parents and teachers were notified during a meeting in April of 2011.
"It's as if we are playing Russian roulette with our children's lives that are attending this school."
Residents say the health risks far out weigh the benefits to this now fully operational cell phone tower
"We have no control over the location of our homes now being 150 feet from a cell tower that is constantly emitting these radio waves."
According to the American Cancer Society website, there is very little evidence to support this idea. It states the energy levels transmitted from a tower is low in comparison to other types of radiation that would increase your chance of getting cancer.
"Aside from that, our property values have plummeted overnight and it's because people know the health risks of these towers and they don't want to buy property within a certain distance of that," said nearby resident Sam Savage.
The school district says this tower is replacing the old tower that was for the school districts use only.
