MIAMI (AP) - A 26-year-old South Florida woman has given her husband the gift of life.

Andrea Bermudez told The Miami Herald (http://hrld.us/13wn4JH ) that she shares antigens and a blood type with her 30-year-old husband Ricardo - which doctors say is a rarity for non-relatives. Two months ago, she gave him a life-saving kidney.

Ricardo Bermudez suffers from IgA nephropathy, a disorder which causes proteins to build up in the kidney. It causes the kidney to become inflamed and to malfunction. The Herald reports he first complained of sharp pain in his lower back in 2011. He began hemodialysis three times a week.

When the couple realized it could take a long time to receive a kidney donation, Andrea stepped up. The operation took place June 12 and Ricardo is recovering.
