FORT MYERS, Fla. - More than month has passed since a toddler drowned at a Lehigh Acres daycare. June 24th, deputies say 2-year-old Christian Byrd drowned in a kiddie pool at Smith Family Daycare. Owner Melissa Smith is charged with Aggravated Manslaughter and three counts of Child Neglect.
Friday, the focus was on Christian's life and the joy he brought to the world. It would have been his third birthday. Family and friends gathered at Fort Myers Memorial Gardens in his honor, releasing butterflies and green balloons, Christian's favorite color.
On the balloons, people wrote messages to send up to the little boy. His mother, Christa Lemonakis read her personal message out loud as a poem.
Christian had actually picked out all of his birthday gifts ahead of time. Christa brought them to Children's Network telling the kids they were gifts from Christian.
