FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) - Authorities say a woman has died after being struck by a South Florida deputy who was driving past a Pompano Beach hospital.
The Broward Sheriff's Office reports that the 46-year-old woman and her boyfriend were walking across North Federal Highway just after 3 a.m. Wednesday when Cpl. Jeffrey Bates hit the woman with his cruiser. There is no crosswalk in the area.
The woman was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital around 3:30 a.m. Her name wasn't immediately released.
BSO's Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating the death. Officials aren't saying whether Bates was responding to a call or whether his lights or sirens were running.
Bates was hired by BSO in March 2002. Since then, officials say he's had one preventable crash, which involved no injuries and only minor damage to the fender of his patrol vehicle.
