FORT MYERS, Fla.- Five soldiers are back in Southwest Florida after completing a tour in Afghanistan. Only WINK was there as these soldiers reunited with their families and witnessed an emotional surprise.
"To see palm trees again, to see trees again, makes everything so much better," said Army Specialist Jason Porter.
Specialist Jason Porter's first deployment is now behind him.
"Everything is a surprise, I know what to expect now, every deployment is different," said Specialist Porter.
Sergeant Jason Venski has left a time before; His first assignment was in Iraq, but the end of this journey in Afghanistan had a special someone waiting to meet him.
"It's unbelievable. The anticipation was eating at me the whole time. I had visions of what it was going to be like, but it didn't compare to what I thought it was," said Sergeant Venski.
His daughter Avery Grace was born while he was overseas.
"She's adorable! I can't wait to get home and spend time with her."
Specialist Keviss Bahoque describes the moments he stepped off the airplane similar to being back on a mission. Our cameras captured this solider propose to his girlfriend.
"Adrenaline's pumping...you just do it. You don't know how to prepare and then you just pop the question," said Specialist Bahoque.
She said, "yes," and also gave birth to their son while he was fighting for our country.
"It's good to know I have him now, that I'm home. I just want to show him I can be a good father."
And even though the miles are hard on military families during deployment, they say they are proud to serve the United States of America.
"Moments like this for all American families is what it's all about. I'm proud to serve our country," said Sergeant Venski.
Two of the soldiers who returned are from Cape Coral, one is from Fort Myers, one is from Lehigh Acres and another continued on to Miami after landing today.
