CAPE CORAL, Fla.- A 1-year-old is dead, and now the State is investigating a possible case of child abuse. The baby was found unresponsive in his crib at a home on NW 36th Place in early June.
Cape Coral Police confirm an active ongoing criminal investigation, but we've learned the Department of Children and Families has opened several cases involving the people that live in the home.
When we knocked on the door, a man answered and said he was there with his girlfriend, but he refused to answer any questions about how a child died.
According to the Department of Children and Families, the baby was pronounced dead in the hospital on June 3rd after his mother found him unresponsive in his crib. The report shows the baby was in the care of his mother and her boyfriend, who was not supposed to be here at the house at the time.
Two weeks earlier, the child was rushed to the emergency room with skull fractures. The couple said he hit his head when he was knocked down by a dog. The State is currently working on a timeline of events in its investigation. At this point, no charges have been filed.
