LEE COUNTY, Fla.- A union could be coming to the Lee County government.

The state has authorized an election in June, on whether to certify the Utility Workers Union of America to represent some Lee workers.

If approved by employees, the union would handle collective bargaining for about 865 blue collar workers in 12 departments in county government. The voting occurs on June 11th, 12th and 13th. A majority vote (50 percent, plus one) will certify the union.

In the past, organizers said they believe a "yes" vote will bring other unions to Lee, and that those other unions might attempt to organize white collar and clerical workers in Lee government.

Lee County employees have not had raises since the recession began several years ago. That's why union organizers believe they have a good chance of a "yes" vote.
