BONITA SPRINGS, FL - Lee county Sheriff's deputies say Robert Sharkey was arrested and charged with improper use of a badge, (impersonating an officer), and leaving the scene of an accident with property damage after what is described as a minor fender bender. Melissa Mamarelli says she was in her car, waiting for the light, at the intersection of Bonita Beach Road and Old 41 when she was hit from behind by a dark green Mazda Miata. She got out of her car and looked back at the driver that hit her. She says the driver motioned for her to pull over. She got back in her car, crossed the intersection and pulled over. She reports, instead of the other driver pulling over, he drove by and gave her a "thumbs up" as he passed. She jumped back in her car and followed the man, waving out the window in an attempt to get him to pull over. Finally, he does and she approaches him. Mammarelli told deputies Robert Sharkey said, "Go check your bumper, it's ok, I've already looked." The report says Mammarelli asked for Sharkey's driver's license and insurance, he allegedly refused and stated, "No, no, no, your fine. Go check your bumper, it's ok."
The back and forth continued, the report says, until Mammarelli said, "my husband is a police officer and he would not like it if I didn't file a police report." To which, Sharkey allegedly flashed his Correction officer badge and replied,"yeah, he's a cop, so am I."
Sharkey allegedly told Mammarelli he had a doctor's appointment and drove off. Mammarelli reported him to Lee County Sheriff's deputies and he was arrested.
