CAPE CORAL, Fla. - A water main break in Cape Coral caused traffic headaches for most of the day.
Cape Coral Police closed down Nicholas Parkway eastbound, from SW Santa Barbara Place to SW 8th Street, as crews repaired the road.
It was a soggy mess near SW 11th Street and Nicholas Parkway. Around 5:30 a.m., an eight-inch break in a PVC water main caused a water outage to several homes.
"Our bathrooms weren't working, and our kids couldn't take showers this morning. I come out and see people working in knee-deep water," said homeowner Jerry Wing.
Wing is one of 15 families who received a boil water notice in the wake of the break. More than six hours after the incident, he was still without water.
"For the kids, brushing their teeth without water and doing all their morning duties was a pain. Luckily, we have the pool to make the bathrooms work," Wing said.
Work on the busted pipe was completed early in the day, but crews spent hours fixing the road. They put down a temporary patch, and will return for full repairs at a later time.
The Utility Department says a preliminary cause of the break is regular wear. A supervisor onsite says the city's PVC pipes lay on a bed of coral rock, and over time, the pipe rubbing against the rock will eventually wear down.
