CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla.- A Charlotte County man faces animal cruelty charges after officers say he left a dog outside wearing an embedded collar.

Animal control officers say a tip came in that the lab-retriever mix named Murdock was left outside, tethered, for long periods of time and that his collar was digging into his neck, causing him to bleed.

The dog also tested positive for heart worms.

Murdock's current foster family says he's doing very well now and is ready for a forever family.

"He's a 40-pound lap dog, he loves to cuddle in your love or loves to cuddle next to you in the bed... Some people just shouldn't own animals and if you can't there's places to take them," says foster parent, Jacques Boudreau.

Deputies arrested Murdock's former owner, Joseph Cavaleri, on Sunday.  WINK News spoke with him Monday.  He says he never kept the dog out overnight and the cuts on his neck were from the dog running around in the yard.
