POMPANO BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Authorities say a man returning to his Pompano Beach townhome somehow got a gun away from a would-be robber and fatally shot him.

A Broward Sheriff's spokesman told television reporters the homeowner is cooperating with authorities. The shooting happened about 5:15 a.m. Tuesday as the men struggled in the driveway at the Conch Key Villas complex.

The sheriff's office has not identified the dead man or the homeowner.

A sheriff's helicopter and K-9 units were searching the area after witnesses reported seeing a vehicle leave the scene.

No further details were immediately available.
