SANIBEL, Fla. - A quiet community is still in shock after learning a man from a well-known family is now at the center of a child porn investigation. Sanibel resident Charles Nave III is accused of downloading and trading more than 200 images of naked children.
Wink News spoke with his pastor at Sanibel Community Church, who has known Nave for more than a decade.
"I had no idea that there was anything of this kind of depth," said Pastor Daryl Donovan, "Sin will always take you further than you ever thought it would and it will always cost you more than you ever imagined."
Nave's mother is an associate pastor at the church.
"Our church is resolved to just stand by his wife and his kids," Donovan said.
Church members showed their supported this week, as they packed a federal courtroom when Nave went before a judge.
"We're praying for Chad, we believe that god can change people and that even in the midst of all this there's still hope," he said.
Donovan says his heart breaks for the young victims.
"I think that's one of the darkest kinds of crimes that can happen," he stated.
The pastor says Nave is no longer allowed to attend the church.
"Parents were really concerned that he would be allowed back on campus or not so we wanted to make a real clear statement that he would not be on campus. We even took that up a notch. We have a security man that will be here tomorrow and as long as we feel he needs to be," the pastor said.
Donovan says he's praying Nave gets the help he needs.
"I think his admitting that he has a problem and needs help is a huge step but my only sadness is that I wish that step had happened before now."
Nave has been ordered to live at his parents' Sanibel home. He's not allowed access to the Internet or minors.
Nave's next court hearing in federal court is scheduled for May 7th.
