LEE COUNTY, Fla. - Convicted of the 2nd degree murder of Mary Ann Zarb back in March, 26-year-old Shane Simpkins was sentenced to life behind bars plus 15 years. Judge Thomas Reese said he had no discretion in the sentencing because Simpkins was a repeat offender. Simpkins was hired by Zarb to do remodeling work in her home back in 2011. Investigators say Simpkins and Co-defendant Chris Neuberger forced Zarb to write thousands of dollars worth of checks to them before they killed her and dumped her body near the Lee / Charlotte county line. Neuberger took a plea deal and testified against Simpkins. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison and 10 years probation. Prosecutors say if Neuberger re-offends in any major way when he gets out, he will have to serve a life sentence as well.
