CAPE CORAL, Fla. - Serving up support for single mothers. Sweet Magnolias is a non-profit coffee house and marketplace that just opened its doors Friday. Proceeds from special hand-crafted items go straight to needy single moms in our area.

Debbie Legg worked with girls in juvenile detention and the Crisis Pregnancy Center and realized there was a need for help. "Single moms, we see, they do not fit with married couples, and they don't fit with just the young girl. They're a community all their own that are really falling through the cracks in our own community," Legg said.

Through two years of hard work, she finally opened what she calls "a miracle" - Sweet Magnolias Coffeehouse and Marketplace. It's located at 909 SE 47th Terrace.

The coffee house, she says, is a work in progress and not yet open. But what you can buy right now are handcrafted items from about 30 vendors from Matlacha to Naples, and even items made by women in Haiti.

Proceeds will help young moms pay for daycare.

"I don't think the community gives single moms enough support," said Charity Stockstell, a vendor selling handmade bath salts.

Although she's just getting started, Debbie has big plans for the future. She wants to have a trade school here, as well as a daycare. "Our long term goals are really to build community with single moms where they can help one another," she said. "Its just been amazing to watch it come together one piece at a time."

As for the coffee house, she hopes to have it up and running in a few weeks.

If you like to make crafts at home, Debbie is searching for more vendors. She's also looking for more donations, and volunteers to run the marketplace and the coffee shop.

Her doors are open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday and 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Anyone who wants to provide financial support can send donations to The Net Community Foundation, PO Box 151015, Cape Coral FL 33915.
