LEE COUNTY, Fla.,- The Lee County Department of Human Services, along with Coast2Coast Rx, announced recently that the county's free discount card has helped constituents to save more than $5.7 million on prescriptions and other vital health care services. The program, launched by the Lee County Board of County Commissioners in October 2010, has reached thousands of residents, collectively saving them millions of dollars on prescription costs, including more than $197,000 in the first month of 2013 alone.
In the current economic climate, the free program serves as an important public service to residents and to participating counties: it requires no administrative work by public personnel, and the card actually generates revenue for public programs—providing $1.25 to Lee County for each prescription filled using the card. District 2 Commissioner Cecil L Pendergrasssaid that significant savings that the card provides has allowed Lee County residents to save on prescriptions that they might not otherwise be able to afford—“In the face of challenging economic conditions every dollar saved is one that makes difference to individuals and families who may be struggling with other household bills."
The same program is available in Collier, Charlotte, Sarasota, Hardee and Highlands counties; although any resident can use the card even if they reside outside of a participating county. Our goal is to increase awareness of this resource so that more residents are aware of this great program, and we hope to have your support. As many consumers struggle with the high cost of medications and health care expenses, the Coast2Coast Rx card allows many constituents to save on their needed prescriptions while creating a revenue stream for their community—making this program a win-win.
With no restrictions on age, income status, or existing health conditions, the benefits of the card extends to everyone: those without insurance, the underinsured and those even those with high deductibles or expenses—such as certain prescriptions or flu vaccines—not covered by their health plan may save significantly by using the free program. In some cases even Medicare Part D patients experiencing the “donut hole” can use the card to help relieve their out-of-pocket expenses.
What many consumers do not know is that since the card launched in Lee County, the program has expanded its range of benefits to include other health care services. The same card also provides discounts on diabetic supplies, vision, hearing and dental care, lab and imaging services, and even certain pet prescriptions and veterinary care.

Although thousands of residents have already used the card to save millions of dollars collectively, there are still many more who could benefit from the savings that the card provides—nobody should have to choose between paying for a prescription they need or buying groceries for the week.
