OCALA, Fla. (AP) - Sheriff's deputies say an 81-year-old man shot a man who had been following him as he drove home.

James Stevens told deputies he knew something wasn't right Sunday night when he noticed a vehicle following him. So he stopped near a field, armed himself with his .38-caliber Smith & Wesson revolver and got out of his truck.

The Ocala Star-Banner (http://bit.ly/XmGwrw ) reports 28-year-old Lonnie Lorenza Hollingsworth Jr. got out of the vehicle and demanded "everything you got."

A sheriff's report says four rounds were shot from the gun and Hollingsworth was hit once, in the abdomen. He's listed in critical condition at an Ocala hospital.

Hollingsworth was convicted in 2008 for altering the serial number of a firearm. Deputies say he wasn't armed Sunday night.

Deputies are investigating.
