FORT MYERS, Fla. - Big news for Eagles fans! The Florida Gulf Coast University men's basketball team is going to the NCAA Tournament. The boys beat Mercer Saturday for the Atlantic Sun Championship.
"I actually watched the game at home today and they did really good and I can't wait to watch the rest of the games," said FGCU student Talia Avitan.
News of the FGCU men's basketball victory quickly went viral.
"It's all over Facebook, all over Twitter, even Nike mentioned them, Nike Basketball on Twitter. It's pretty exciting," said Ashley English with the FGCU Athletic Department.
Eagle fans told Wink News they're are getting their brackets ready as the boys get an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
"I actually do a pool every year and I have won a few times, so many I'll put FGCU higher," said Julia Arias.
It's the team's first tournament appearance in the program's history.
"I know last year they got really close to making NCAA, so I'm very excited they made it this time," said Freshmen Lani Cabrera.
Students say they're ready for their campus to get national attention.
"It'll help our school so much. We're a small school. When I was a Freshmen here, people didn't even know what FGCU was. Now it's definitely putting us on the map for sure," said English.
And they hope FGCU can hang with bigger schools.
"It's gonna be hard but I hope they do good," said Arias.
Fellow FGCU athletes say win or lose they are ready for March Madness.
"We're are going to support them and go to the NCAA selection show and show our support," said soccer player Thomas Cerda.
"I have my own swim meet that weekend but I'll be cheering from my heart," said Cabrera.
The Eagles make the tournament in their second year of Division 1 post season eligibility.
