BONITA SPRINGS, Fla.- Some students from Bonita Springs Middle School have just won their school a $15,000 music grant from Rack Room Shoes.
The students are from the same Odyssey of the Mind team but did not enter the Rack Room Shoes contest as an official project. During the holidays, they heard about a contest that was offering the prize for the best music video. The team was one of four winners nationwide. They decided to do a parody of "Deck the Halls" for their entry. The money will mostly be used to buy new instruments and fix old instruments for the band.
"It's important to get better instruments and make the school sound better," says team member Bradley Mell. "And give the school a better reputation." Bonita Middle is now just in its second year as a performing arts school.
Band Director Sarah Rigney says the music money couldn't have come at a better time. "We have instruments that just don't work," she said. "We want to get those fixed. Without the instruments, I can't teach class."
Some of the instruments the band uses have been around since the school opened, about 33 years ago. The grant money will also be used to purchase sheet music. Students at the school are now gearing up to stage their first musical - Annie - in the auditorium May 16th and 17th.
