FORT MYERS, Fla- A Fort Myers couple is dead after a collision with a Lee County Sheriff's Office patrol car Sunday morning.

Florida Highway Patrol says 84-year-old John and 77-year-old Marilyn Steffen turned left onto Palm Beach Boulevard from Mississippi Avenue and into the path of one of the patrol cars.

They were on their way to church.

FHP says Lee County Sheriff's deputy Roberto Torres was responding to a 911 call when the crash happened, and that the emergency lights were on. Witnesses say the sirens were not.

According to friends of the couple, they had planned to leave Fort Myers in two days to go back up North. The funeral and burial will be held in Ohio, but the Steffens' Florida neighbors say they are are planning a memorial.

The crash is under investigation.
