TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - A Miami senator wants more accountability for elections supervisors, pointing at what he says were mishandled elections in his county and four others.
    
While the governor can remove an elections supervisor for incompetence, among other reasons, it's rarely done. Sen. Miguel Diaz de la Portilla said Tuesday there should be other ways to discipline elections supervisors when elections don't go right.
    
He made his comments during a Senate Ethics and Elections Committee meeting and suggested that the governor or secretary of state should be able to suspend or place a supervisor on probation.
    
Pasco County elections supervisor Brian Corley expressed reservations about the idea, saying it would be the equivalent of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement suspending an elected sheriff because crime went up in his county.
