File stock image Troopers say a motorcyclist who died in a crash Saturday evening in Port Charlotte was speeding. The Florida Highway Patrol says the motorcyclist, a 42-year-old Port Charlotte man, was northbound on US-41, approaching Chamberlain Boulevard, at a high rate of speed when he drove into a van that was crossing the intersection at about 6:20 p.m. The motorcyclist was thrown from his bike and died at the scene. Troopers say he was wearing a helmet. The van’s 66-year-old driver and his 60-year-old passenger were not injured. The crash remains under investigation. The Florida Highway Patrol no longer releases the names of those involved in crashes, citing Marsy’s Law.
