FORT MYERS, Fla - A couple says they hired a company to move them less than a mile and what should have been a simple move, turned into a big hassle.
Joyce Wasylik's simple move turned into a classic example of "he-said-she-said" and it ended with her entertainment center sitting in her old living room. She and her husband hired City of Palms Movers out of Cape Coral last month to move from a condo to a house, less than a mile apart from each other. A decision she says she deeply regrets.
Joyce showed us two pieces of glass that she says were shattered during the move. The movers' insurance would have covered part of the cost in replacing them, except those damages were never documented because of what Joyce claimed happened next.
"He said I'm just gonna go downstairs and make a phone call to see where those other guys are with the entertainment center. Then he goes downstairs gets in his truck and leaves," she told us.
With the cash in hand, Joyce says City of Palms Movers left before the job was completed. The entertainment center was still in the old condo and the bed frames in the new house were never assembled.
After more than a week of trying to get a hold of City of Palms Movers, company officials called me back a few hours before this story aired. They wouldn't agree to a recorded interview, but they deny Joyce's story. They say they needed a third man to move the entertainment center and that Joyce refused to pay the extra money, so the move ended there.
Joyce denies that claim, and ultimately had to pay another company to move the entertainment center.
"It's gonna cost me an additional $160 to move this one piece of furniture," she said.
There are a number of items your moving company should give you when they're hired.
First, always get an estimate. Make sure it's in writing, done in person and signed by you and the movers.
You should also get an inventory list before your mover leaves your original location. That is the receipt that shows you each item you shipped and its condition.
