PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.- Charlotte County Sheriff's detectives arrested a man for having sex twice with an 11-year-old runaway girl.
She had been staying in a Fort Myers youth shelter and was granted a weekend home visit. When she got home Sep. 4, she ran away. She was located and returned to the shelter on Sep. 5.
Following a lengthy investigation, CCSO Detectives arrested Christopher Maurice Roberts, 37, of Fleming Island, Florida on two felony counts of Capital Sexual Battery.
When the girl returned to the youth shelter, she told a counselor about the sexual battery that occurred by two man in an unknown Port Charlotte home; the counselor notified CCSO. During a forensic interview with the girl she said when she ran away and was approached by a man in a custom painted purple 4-door car who asked if she needed a ride. She told the man she was walking to a gas station to buy a soda. The man offered her a ride and she accepted. During the ride she said he began discussing different sexually related topics including sexual intercourse and oral sex.
The girl said he drove her to an unidentified home and they went into a bedroom. He asked her to perform oral sex on him and she did. He then took her into the living room where another man on a couch. That man asked her to perform oral sex on him, too. The man then took her back into the same bedroom and they had sexual intercourse. The girl in a forensic interview gave detailed descriptions of the two men. She also said she did not offer any resistance as she was in fear for her life if she had resisted.
A local BOLO was issued to area law enforcement agencies about the two unidentified suspects and the purple car.
On Sep. 24, North Port Police checked documents that revealed they made a traffic stop on a custom painted purple 2006 Dodge Charger and identified two men in the car. The driver was Christopher Maurice Roberts. The other man’s name is not being released at this time as the investigation is ongoing. Knowing the two men’s names, their photos were obtained and put in a photo lineup; the girl positively identified both men.
Tuesday at 3:45 p.m. the detectives was traveling south on U.S. 41 approaching the Punta Gorda bridge and spotted the purple Dodge Charger going northbound. The detective couldn’t turn around on the bridge so he contacted other units in the area to look for the purple car. Moments later a deputy stopped the purple car and made a traffic stop at 3013 Tamiami Trail in Port Charlotte; the driver was Roberts. The detective met with Roberts and informed him of the sexual battery case; he declined to comment and wanted to speak to his attorney. Roberts was transported to the Charlotte County Jail where he remains on no bond.
This is his fourth booking at Charlotte County jail this year. He was arrested on drug charges last January, and then April 30 in an undercover prostitution operation for Deriving Support from Prostitution at a Jones Loop Road area motel. At the time of that arrest, Roberts was living on Cape Horn Boulevard in Burnt Store Lakes.
