LEE COUNTY, Fla.- Taking a page from the hit show "Undercover Boss," Lee Memorial Health System Chief Operating Officer Larry Antonucci spends a day each month walking in his employees' shoes.
WINK News tagged along as Dr. Antonucci served lunch in the the Lee Memorial Hospital cafeteria today. It is just one stop on his "Where's Larry Been?" tour through the health system.
"I thought it would be a great way to not only learn everything going on but to meet the people and shine a little light on what they do everyday," Dr. Antonucci says.
He gets down in the trenches with the employees, doing everything from rounds with nurses, making up beds, and even cleaning toilets. He says the employees seem to enjoy the experience. "They are a little apprehensive to begin with but we break that down real quick and I tell them hey, I'm here like anybody else, make believe I'm a recruit and just teach me what your doing and let me do it with you."
Dr. Antonucci is wrapping up his first year as Chief Operating Officer. He started the program at the beginning of the year and plans to continue visiting different departments. He says, "what's amazing is how hard everyone is working on behalf of the patients, whether it's the housekeepers or the transporters or food service folks everyone is giving all they've got to make it the best experience for the patients."
Larry Altier, food services director for the health system, says his employees take it all in good fun. "They're pretty excited when they get a chance to chat with him and work along side him, seeing him to the same thing they do day in and day out, it's exciting."
