CCSO deputies responded to the store when employees said a man wearing a Miami Heat sweatshirt, khaki shorts, black Nike shoes and a Chicago Bulls hat came in, grabbed two I-Phone 4S models, and fled the store. Value of the two phones was $1,300. Analert was sent to all AT&T storesin southwest Florida. A short time later, there was an attempted theft from the AT&T store in Cape Coral at 1860 Pine Island Road. Employees said the man entered their store matching the description of the Charlotte County suspect. They blocked the phones on display to prevent the man from stealing them. The man left the store and got into a black Infinity G37 and left the area.
At 3:00 p.m., Deputies of the Collier County Sheriff’s Office responded to the AT&T store at 13555 Tamiami Trail in Naples in reference to an attempted theft of iPhones. Employees also received the Charlotte County alert and man’s description who stole two phones in Port Charlotte. Employees observed the black Infinity circling the parking lot of the store and removed the specific iPhones from their display. The man in the same clothing approached the front door and employees prevented him from entering; the subject ran away and got back into the Infinity and left.
At 3:32 p.m. Collier County deputies made a traffic stop on the Infinity; the driver was 26-year-old Dermar Okealo Hamilton and his passenger was Douglas. Hamilton was arrested for Possession of Marijuana. Douglas was taken into custody on an outstanding warrant. When deputies searched the car they found five iPhones, and the clothing Douglas was wearing at all three AT&T stores. Two of the phones matched IMEI numbers that were stolen from the Port Charlotte store.
Douglas told detectives he got a ride to Port Charlotte with a friend in Miami and had sex with a prostitute in her Port Charlotte home. After that he said he was walking and looking for a ride home. He said he saw the AT&T store and decided to steal the iPhones. He further said he was arrested in Sunrise for stealing cell phones from a Sprint store and needed the money for his court fees.
Douglas was returned to Punta Gorda on the August warrant and remains in the Charlotte County Jail on $15,000 bond.
