NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla.- Lee County Sheriff's deputies arrested 21-year-old Mirinda Buyce and 22-year-old Guy Kearns, both of 248 San Diego St., on child neglect charges after several witnesses filed complaints alleging the abuse.
Initial allegations reported a photo of the 3-month-old child with unexplained bruising was see on Buyce's Facebook page in July, though Buyce reportedly took the photo down after people started commenting on it.
According to the affidavit, concerns were also raised when the victim's mother said the child's father had lost his temper and kicked the baby's car seat across the room while she was secured in it. Buyce later denied making this statement.
Staff at the Naples Hospital conducted a medical evaluation on the baby and reportedly found her unclean, suffering from several infections and had maggots in her ear. It is believed the victim was subjected to severe and chronic neglect.
A Child Protective Investigator told LCSO officers there was a history of domestic violence in the home, though both parents denied this. The victim's residence was allegedly infested with fleas and flies.
Witnesses said the trailer Buyce and Kearns were living in was infested with cockroaches and that the baby was placed on the floor to play frequently, though the parents were aware of the presence of maggots also on the floor. Witnesses also said food, used feminine products and feces were also seen on the floor of the residence.
The baby is now in the custody of family members.
