FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Nonstop airline service between Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) and Green Bay's Austin Straubel International Airport (GRB), Wis., began Wednesday.
MetJet will operate a weekly flight on Wednesdays between Green Bay and Fort Myers as a public charter through April 2013.
MetJet's newest flight increases RSW's total to 42 non-stop destinations.
"A lot of people don't like that they have to go through Detroit or Minneapolis to come down here," said Carol Obermeier, Director of Air Service Development.
"The MetJet folks, they came to us and we met in the middle. This is a great opportunity for both MetJet and Southwest Florida International Airport," Obermeier said.
Today's first flight was only half-full, but MetJet is confident word-of-mouth and changing weather will soon fill the planes.
"There's a lot of people who live in upper Wisconsin and the Midwest that usually winter down here. It's a great addition to the local economy," said Jeremy Cochrane with MetJet.
This is the first time RSW will have nonstop service to Green Bay.
