PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.- Charlotte County Sheriff's deputies arrested a Port Charlotte man after he ran over his neighbor with a golf cart, following an argument. Carl Travis Martin Jr., 53, of 21040 Jerome Avenue, was arrested for Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon, Resisting an Officer, and Driving While License Suspended or Revoked.
CCSO responded to a call Saturday at 6:21 p.m. to talk to the 46-year-old victim who said he was run over by his neighbor. The victim said he was engaged in a verbal argument with Martin by his mailbox. Martin got on his golf cart and said he was going to run over him. The victim was standing on the edge of the roadway and said Martin continued to drive at him with no sign of slowing down. At the last second the victim said he turned his body to the side and Martin’s golf cart struck him. The victim told deputies Martin had a pit bull riding with him and he didn’t want to confront Martin after being struck out of fear of the dog and being further attacked. Martin turned the golf cart around and drove back to his home. The victim’s wife called CCSO.
Deputies observed the victim’s legs and saw scrapes, scratches, and bruising; the victim however refused EMS. Deputies then talked to two neighborhood witnesses who verified the victim’s account of the incident. Deputies then went to Martin’s home and asked him what happened; Martin at first said, “nothing,” then said the victim may have been struck when he went to turn his golf cart around to go home.
Deputies advised Martin he was under arrest but he refused to put his hands behind his back and stood firm, then attempted to pull away. He was finally secured with handcuffs and transported to the Charlotte County Jail. Martin posted a $6,000 bond Sunday and was released; this is his fifth booking into the jail.
