FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla.- The Lee County Sheriff's Office is investigating an incident in which a man claims he was put in a choke hold and robbed by strangers in his own home. One of the suspects left a shoe behind in the process.
Deputies received a call at 11:45 p.m. on Monday in reference to a robbery that has occurred on Estero Blvd.
The 24-year-old victim told officers he heard a knock on his back door about 45 minutes earlier. The person knocking was trying to get his attention, as if he was in need of help. When the victim opened the door, an unknown male put his foot inside the back patio, so the door could not be closed. Another man then entered the patio and put the victim in a choke hold, continually striking him with his fists.
Deputies noticed bruising and swelling to the victim's face, as well as blood on the patio carpet, that would corroborate his story.
The suspect who had held his foot in the door, then entered and began to search the victim's pockets. He took money out of the victim's wallet, leaving the wallet behind.
According to the incident report, the suspects then attempted to entered the living room, but the door to the house was locked, so they fled the residence. The victim said the suspects left in a silver, 4-door, hatchback Ford. A driver was waiting for them.
One of the suspects lost a Jordan flip-flop at the bottom of the stairs to the residence.
Initially, the victim thought his phone had also been stolen, but deputies later found it outside the back porch.
The victim told officers he was embarrassed that he had been beaten up, so he took a shower and changed his clothes before walking to a nearby 7-11 and asking the clerk to call LCSO for him.
The investigation continues.
