SARASOTA, Fla.- Michael Minor was arrested Saturday on First Degree Murder, Attempted Armed Robbery and Armed Burglary charges, after Sam Dreher, a Charlotte County firefighter, was killed in a shooting.

Deputies located the victim at 3:00 p.m. on a set of stairs between the second and third floors of the Saratoga Place Apartments, with extensive head trauma. He was transported by helicopter to the Blake Medical Center, where he was not expected to survive. Dreher died at 9:44 p.m. on Saturday.

Deputies estimate that four shots were fired at the victim, two of which struck him.

When Sarasota County deputies arrived on the scene, the 27-year-old suspect began walking toward them, spontaneously making statements including, "I didn't mean to shoot him. The gun is in my pocket." And, "I'm sorry. Oh my God. I didn't mean to kill someone."

A 9mm handgun was retrieved from Minor's shorts  pocket.

Detectives say Minor went to the apartment to retrieve items he believed were in a vehicle belonging to the 39-year-old victim. Minor entered the vehicle, but was confronted by Dreher, and at that time Minor demanded the victim's wallet and cell phone. The two men argued and when Dreher saw the 9mm handgun in Minor’s possession he fled up the stairs. That's when Dreher was shot twice.
