CAPE CORAL, Fla.- Sun Splash Water Park in Cape Coral is wrapping up its summer season and getting ready to change its hours as kids head back to school.
Starting on Wednesday, August 8, the water park will be open weekends only until the end of the season on September 30.
Park manager Sandie Greiner says it has been a successful season, despite an increase in rain-outs.
She says, "as of the end of June, we already had 27 rain effected days as opposed to 10 in 2011, and the first few days of July were Tropical Storm Debbie." But she says revenue numbers are looking good, and she credits that to cutting expenses.
"I'm constantly walking through the park to see if we need every employee here. Like birthday parties, we had 4 people manning a party now maybe we have 2 and a supervisor. We're always thinking of ways to cut down the payroll without cutting customer service," she adds.
She says with kids going back to school, that also includes most of her lifeguards.
For many families visiting the park on Sunday, it was the perfect way to slide into the school year.
John Wurtenberg says, "this is just some good old fashioned fun .The kind of fun that most of us older people have been raised on. Fun, sun and of course if it gets too fast paced, you can go in the lazy river."
Dawn Eastman brought more than 20 family members and friends from Charlotte County to soak up some sun. "The end of the summer blast before school starts Tuesday," she says.
The park will be open Monday, August 6 and Tuesday, August 7.
Weekend hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
