FORT MYERS, Fla. - What was once a forgotten sport is getting a comeback, and one local group is leading the way.

The Fort Myers Derby Girls have been taking to the rinks, taking on some of the best competition the Sunshine State can offer.

"It's like hockey, or any other aggressive sport," says one derby girl. "Tempers do flare, but it's really good if you want to get in shape and do something that's not the gym, where it's boring stuff everyday."

It could be because of the unique training style offered, but the participation in roller derby is continuing to grow,  The Derby Girls are constantly adding new members, training them and preparing them for competitions.

They even take in people with little, or no, skating experience.  Anyone willing to learn and give roller derby a try will be welcomed into the community.

"It's a good sisterhood of friends that support you and come to motivate you to keep trying and pushing," according to a derby girl.

The cameraderie is what keeps women coming back to the rink, to welcome the bumps and bruises that comes with the roller derby lifestyle.

And for many of the competitors with the Fort Myers Derby Girls, they say the decision to join roller derby is the best decision a person could make.

"My husband thought I was crazy, but I kept practicing and here I am five years later, still doing roller derby."
