FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) - A southwest Florida woman has been sentenced to more than 10 years in prison for fatally stabbing her husband.
A Lee County judge sentenced 42-year-old Leatha James on Thursday. She was convicted in January of manslaughter with a weapon. The News-Press reports that prosecutors had previously offered her a plea deal for five years of probation.
Prosecutors say James stabbed her husband, 44-year-old Arthur James, in the back in January 2009. The two had been fighting at their Lehigh Acres home after she learned he had cheated on her.
An arresting deputy testified that Leatha James confessed to the stabbing, but it wasn't documented in the arrest report. A defense attorney also argued that Arthur James would have survived if not for mistakes that were made at the hospital.
