EVERGLADES CITY, Fla -- The host of a popular fishing show Spanish Fly was killed in a plane crash in Everglades City Friday afternoon.

Jose Wejebe was flying his single engine plane from Everglades City when it crashed in a nearby field just after 4:30 p.m.

Witnesses who saw the plane go down describe an instant explosion. Charlotte Ledford was sitting in her house, right across from the Everglades City Airport when she heard the plane crash just beyond the trees.

"I saw the plane go down and it looked like it bounced and then it hit the ground and it exploded," says Ledford.

Her next door neighbor Bonnie Woodward says there was a loud explosion and an instant plume of smoke.

"My husband and I ran over where we could see more of the smoke and I said to Craig, there's no way the person could have survived that," says Woodward.

From their deck you can see crime tape around the scene and smoke from the plane just beyond the trees.

"It sounded like a huge transformer blowing and we both went running out to see where it was and it was just huge black smoke," says Woodward.

People who knew Wejebe tell WINK News he had just finished shooting for the day. He was planning to fly back to Key West. It was windy and when he took off, the plane veered hard and crashed.

Wejebe was very well known on ESPN and had followers around the world. He's survived by one daughter.
