LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. - A 20 acre brush fire caused minor damage to at least one home, but frightened dozens of people in an east Lehigh Acres neighborhood.

The fire was first reported Tuesday afternoon near Mary Avenue and Estate Street, and quickly spread through the neighborhood.

"Kids hollered, 'Dad, Dad, Fire! Fire!' I was expecting just a little bit of fire," said witness Dave Mosley. "I came out, and as far as you could see, nothing but red fire."

Mosley stepped outside to see a massive fire right next door.

"It was unbelievable. Fire was above the lines right there, just unbelievable," he said

With homes scattered around the neighborhood, Mosley alerted his neighbors, then tried to protect his home as the flames crept closer.

"In the name of Jesus, stop, that's what I was thinking," Mosley said. "First thing I did was grab the hose and try to water stuff down. It just wasn't helping."

The fire jumped over roads, burning across several blocks, including the woods right across the street from Heather Hunsicker's home.

"It was pretty hot, because when we were out here spraying, we could feel the heat from the fire," Hunsicker said.

Hunsicker and her daughter sprayed down their home as the fire raced through the neighborhood.

"Within a couple of minutes, not even five, it jumped across some guy's yard at the corner had gotten torched because of it," said daughter Felicia Keene.

Families were thankful for the quick work of the firefighting teams who saved their homes.

"They'd done a wonderful job. Hats go off to all of them for the dangerous work that they do," Hunsicker said.
