FORT MYERS, Fla. - Police are on the lookout for a person they say shot and killed another man just outside a Fort Myers apartment complex.

It happened at the Palm Vista Apartments on Central Avenue, just after 5 p.m.

Officers had the complex taped off for several hours after they say a man was shot in the head there.

The shooter got away, but police say witnesses saw the shooter in the parking lot before and after the crime.

"He was seen coming into the area and leaving the area," said Lt. Jay Rodriguez. "carrying some type of long rifle, assault rifle, or a shot gun."

The man got away, but officers say there are some leads.

"We do have some good witnesses. We have an idea of where the suspect came and a possibility of where he fled to, and a good clothing description," Rodriguez said.

Police are still investigating whether the victim and shooter knew each other, and what motivated the crime.

Meantime, residents at the complex are wary of their surroundings with the killer still on the loose.

"When something like that happens, you don't want to live on this street with your kids, with your family. This is scary, said Caman Metelus, a resident.

According to police, the identity of the victim has been confirmed but won't be released until his family is notified.

Anyone with information is asked to call Fort Myers Police or Crimestoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS.
