CAPE CORAL, Fla -- "Be Wicked: Drink Wicked Dolphin Rum." That's the motto behind a brand-new Cape Coral distillery. Cape Spirits, INC. is set to open in May.
For Joann Elardo, the idea for this distillery started with a simple taste. "To be honest I was drinking some pretty bad rum," laughs Elardo. She's turning that bad flavor into a good idea, creating Wicked Dolphin Rum using only Florida ingredients, with a logo to match.
"The dolphin is very important, I think for Florida, the sunshine, Florida, the blue skies Florida," she said.
Her dream is transforming a building between Nicholas Parkway and Santa Barbara Boulevard into a successful distribution center. It will not be open to the public, but will ship bottles to stores and restaurants nationwide.
"You can see the finish line." Cape Coral Economic Development Director Dana Brunett says this is a unique addition to the city. "People pick it up and see "bottled in Cape Coral, Florida." You know, it gives us that name recognition and you're always trying to find that in some way shape or form," he said.
It wont just create rum, but jobs. "I drew everything out yesterday." Cape Coral resident Elijah Zorro is hand painting the logo. "I've been painting and drawing since I was pretty much old enough to pick up a pencil," he said.
They'll start distilling in May and you should see this in your local bars and restaurants in October. Eventually, Cape Spirits will offer products made with rum, including chocolate, barbeque sauce, rum sauce, and rum cakes.
