PALM HARBOR, Fla. (AP) - Fire rescue officials say a Tampa Bay area firefighter lost his footing on an unstable dock while fighting a boat fire and fell into the water.

Palm Harbor Fire Rescue spokeswoman Elizabeth Monforti says the fire early Wednesday badly damaged the boat and the slip at the Home Port Marina.

The Tampa Bay Times (http://bit.ly/Ak0gsT ) reports the firefighter fell face first into the water while wearing his full gear, which weighs 50 to 60 pounds.

Monforti says the firefighter did exactly what he was taught to do. He tucked his legs and flipped onto his back as he fell into the water. She says he was not injured.

Investigators say two boats on either side of the burned boat suffered minor damage.

No further details were immediately available.
