MARCO ISLAND, FLa.- WINK News has learned of a letter circulating around Southwest Florida containing what appears to be an authentic check.
The letter instructs people to deposit the check, then wire part of the money to the United Kingdom to receive $50,000.
Experts say you should be on alert. They say the wealth of Southwest Florida is irresistable to scammers.
"They know if they do enough of these they'll strike a pay dirt and someone will begin sending them checks," Iberiabank Vice President Keith Dameron said.
Dameron says you should never call any numbers on these kinds of letters.
Instead, he says, contact your bank or consult the scam section on the Better Business Bureau website.
