LEE COUNTY, Fla.- One Southwest Florida mom is turning her tragedy into a mission to mentor troubled kids. We first introduced you to Donna Arnold back in September. The mother lost her son, Chad, in 2003 after he took his own life during the longest standoff in Cape Coral's history.
Donna Arnold's unthinkable loss is now being used to help others heal.
"I want to give them a reason to be somebody because they are," Arnold said Wednesday.
"From Detention to Prevention" focuses on finding troubled teens and steering them away a future life of crime.
"We have a few programs that are coming up kind of like a 'Scared Straight' program, a trauma outreach so they can see the realities of traumas of things like gunshot wounds," Arnold said.
WINK News shared Arnold's painful story back in 2003. Her son, Chad, took his own life during a standoff with police...the devastating end to a long battle with addiction.
"He was the most wonderful person you'd ever meet. He had a drug problem. That's it," she said.
But today, Chad's story is helping others find hope.
The program uses something as simple as music to give kids the motivation to succeed.
"On paper it might seem like this person is a horrible person, but when you talk to them and you a heart to heart, it's not about evil people...it's about people getting caught up in the wrong mindset and making the wrong decisions," From Detention to Prevention mentor Adam Jerabek said Wednesday.
The mentoring program is only a few months in the making. While Arnold has big plans for the future, she says her focus will always stay squarely on the kids.
"They just need help. And that's what I want to do. Teach them something, give them life skills. Teach them, there is a better way,"
