FORT MYERS, Fla -- A Florida congressman is making a push to help out American troops with loose change left at airports.
You may be surprised to find out that travelers leave behind hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of change at airport security checkpoints every year.
When you add it up, from airports across the country, it totals more than $400,000. Right now, that money goes right back to TSA for operational costs.
Congressman Jeff Miller (R-FL) is proposing a change. He says, "travelers lost change should be put to good use and there is no better organization to use this money wisely than the United Service Organization.
But not all travelers flying into RSW in Ft. Myers agree. John Farrell thinks the money should stay with TSA. He says, "I think it makes sense to keep the money to offset operational costs."
Duane Strand was a member of the USO while serving in the Marines in the 1950's. He is all for Miller's proposal and knows first hand how much the extra change means. "They need a lot of money to help these soldiers out, especially the men coming home," Strand said.
Miller is also think about expanding his bill to include items left behind like sunglasses, cameras and computers. TSA would not comment on the pending legislation.
