NAPLES, Fla.- Consider it paradise for the savvy shopper.
"I've seen mostly you buy one, get one free stuff, or you get 50% off," shopper Monica Cruz said Monday.
Naples' Coastland Center's JCPenney's was just one retailer drastically marking town merchandise for President's Day.
"We're really making a bit more room for our seasonal areas, it is like a clean sweep of the fall merchandise," said store manager Ron Worley.
Consumers came out in numbers to take advantage of the sales. Worley brought on 12 additional staffers to handle Monday's holiday crowds.
"In the apparel areas, we have definitely picked up in sales. Home continues to be sluggish, but the apparel areas are absolutely tremendous. Ladies are ready for some new styles," Worley said.
Retailers are hoping a strong winter holiday shopping season will carry on through 2012. National Retail Federation numbers show they're well on their way: overall January consumer sales were up 4% from the same time last year.
While crowds at the Coastland Center didn't exactly stack up to Black Friday mobs, shoppers are celebrating a holiday for their pocketbook.
"Some terrific bargains, they're really great. $5 shirts are hard to match," shopper Charles Curtiss said Monday.
Online shopping site, Shop It to Me, reports President's Day sales averaged 46.7% off apparel, shoes, and accessories...more than Black Friday and Cyber Monday overall discounts.
