NAVARRE, Fla. (AP) - A new artificial reef will be sunk off a Florida Panhandle beach.
Santa Rosa County engineer Roger Blaylock says the reef will be sunk in the Gulf of Mexico off Navarre.
Blaylock tells the Pensacola News Journal (http://on.pnj.com/xBiMuq ) that the project should begin sometime in March.
The first phase of the reef project is a field of 30 column-like structures intended to attract sea life.
County tourism officials say the Navarre reef will attract visitors who come to Pensacola to dive the Oriskany, a retired Navy aircraft carrier sunk in the waters off the city in 2006.
