CAPE CORAL, Fla. - Crews came to the rescue Sunday afternoon, after a dolphin was stranded on a sandbar in the Caloosahatchee River.
Rescuers tell WINK News the animal was first spotted by a tour boat. The dolphin was beached in less than 2 feet of water.
The rescue group was made up of 2 marine deputies with the Lee County Sheriff's Office, an FWC marine biologist, and tour boat captain David Holzhauer.
"When he rolled over, we knew that was the time we had to act. We jumped in the water and had to hold him upright because he was just really really tired," Holzhauer said.
It took a few hours to get the dolphin onto a canvass stretcher and transport it to a truck, where it was taken away to an FWC rescue center.
Holzhauer's profession brings him in contact with dolphins all the time, but he has never experience anything like it before.
"On our sightseeing trips, and the things that I do, we get to see them everyday, but never have we seen one that really needed help," Holzhauer said.
