COLLIER COUNTY, Fla.- UPDATE: Youfman Robinson was arrested Monday on felony charges in connection with this incident.
Robinson, 29, of 407 S. 3rd St. in Immokalee, was arrested at the Collier County jail and charged with aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting an officer with violence.
Robinson is a habitual felony offender. He has been lodged at the jail since his Nov. 4, 2010, arrest on an aggravated child abuse charge in which he is accused of severely burning a child who was in his care.
ORIGINAL REPORT: Detectives are investigating an incident at the Collier County jail that sent one corrections deputy to the hospital and another to an urgent care center Thursday.
Corporal Robert S. Caudill received a 1-inch laceration to his head and bruising to his face after being struck with his agency-issued radio during a physical altercation with an inmate.
Deputy Michael Carbonia suffered a leg injury while responding to the code blue incident, which happened shortly after noon in the jail sally port.
The incident is still under investigation. Charges are expected to be filed against the inmate, sheriff's investigators said.
Collier County Sheriff's Office reports gave this account:
Inmate Youfman Robinson started using abusive language while he waited for his scheduled video visitation in one of the jail housing areas. Cpl. Caudill advised Robinson that his language was not appropriate. Robinson continued using abusive language and became disruptive.
Robinson refused numerous orders from Cpl. Caudill to return to his cell. Robinson finally entered his cell but walked out just prior to the door closing.
Robinson followed Cpl. Caudill into the sally port, where he grabbed Cpl. Caudill from behind and attempted to throw him to the floor. Cpl. Caudill grabbed Robinson and both men landed on the floor. An altercation ensued. Both men got up and Robinson grabbed Cpl. Caudill's radio from the floor and struck Cpl. Caudill on the head with it.
Deputies arrived in the sally port to assist and were able to gain control of Robinson.
At least two inmates told sheriff's investigators that they saw Robinson strike Cpl. Caudill with a radio.
Cpl. Caudill was transported to NCH Downtown Naples Hospital, where he received three staples to close the gash in his head.
Deputy Carbonia was taken to a nearby urgent care center for a knee injury.
Robinson faces a series of charges including aggravated battery and resisting arrest with violence, both felonies, investigators said.
