NAPLES, Fla -- A WINK News investigation uncovers a Naples real estate broker, arrested this week for grand theft, has been accused of stealing rent money before.
Theresia Helton was arrested Monday. She's accused of secretly renting out a Bonita Springs condo, collecting rent and cashing in on more than $4,000.
WINK News uncovered a list of complaints filed with the Department of Business and Professional Regulation, including one filed by Brenda Brown.
Brown owns a condo in East Naples. Last year she hired Helton to rent it out. "She advertised she was a broker and that she would take care of our rental properties for us and we had no reason to think she wouldn't," said Brown.
Brown became suspicious when two months went by without hearing a word from Helton. "She rented the apartment out without our knowledge. We thought the apartment was vacant from October to February," says Brown.
Brown says Helton rented the condo out to nursing agency and collected five months of rent, a security deposit and fees totaling more than $5,000. "She was getting checks rom the nursing agency and she was cashing them. We had no idea," said Brown.
Brown filed a complaint with the DBPR and she's not the only one. Our WINK News investigation found two other complaints. The state found that Helton rented out a home facing foreclosure without telling the tenant. She also rented out a home in another East Naples community and kept the security deposit.
Brown says, "I hope she does lose her realtors license because she is dishonest and what she's done to people, stealing from them, I mean it's fraud, it's miss representation."
The state recommended Hilton be punished. Anything from suspension to losing her license. Helton is a member of the Naples Area Board of Realtors (NABOR). WINK News reached out to NABOR for comment. We were told they do have a code of ethics and a committee that will review her license, but beyond that they could not comment on a specific member.
