BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. - A controversy over banning shark fishing from the beach in Bonita Springs. The city council heard arguments from both sides today and settled on a possible, temporary compromise.
Reeling in "the big one" is something BigSharkFishing.com Captain Chris DeWitt has done for decades. He agrees that chumming near swimmers is not a smart idea.
"I think they have a pretty good point and I think the fishermen should know better than to get too close to the swimming areas while they're chumming," he said.
But Diane Frazine says she continues to see it happen near Bonita beaches and wants something to be done.
"What it's doing is pulling the shark from out in the deep water by taking the canoe or kayak out there and bringing it into where we swim, not just us but it's all the public beach along there," she said.
This issue is centered around safety. Some are worried constant chumming near the beach will draw sharks to stay near the beach. That's why they want fisherman to catch sharks in an environment completely away from people.
"Take people out in the ocean and fish shark. I'm only saying chumming from shore in a public beach area is not proper," said Frazine.
Bonita Springs Mayor Ben Nelson says at this time the city will look into signs to educate the public to prevent chumming near swimmers, but will wait until next legislative session before considering an official ban near the beach.
"In order to have chumming applied to certain specific areas outside of public beaches and designated swimming areas, it has to be a legislative action," said Mayor Nelson.
The mayor tells us chumming is not permitted in designated swimming areas such as public beaches.
But some residents are concerned because they say some of those designated areas are not clearly marked.
