NAPLES, Fla.- Dave Bierbrauer crossed an item off his bucket list Wednesday when he played in the Ace Classic Pro-Am golf tournament in Naples.
Known affectionately as "Disco Dave," Bierbrauer was diagnosed with carcinoma of the cardiac gland, a rare form of cancer in 2008.
The cancer has come back 8 times since then. He was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer a few weeks ago.
Bierbrauer described what it was like to tee off at the Pro-Am tournament Wednesday.
"I just kind of pictured everything about having therapy and therapy was my golf swing. I eliminated everything and I did what I needed to do. I actually shut my eyes when I hit the ball and I did it," he said.
Bierbrauer has undergone 8 surgeries, 48 weeks of chemo therapy, and 82 radiation treatments over the last 3 and a half years.
He says the two things that keep him going are, "Golf and people. If you're not aggressive, you're going to lose. I think I'm going to touch some lives out there with what I'm doing. I know I can."
He's already made an impact on countless Southwest Floridians.
Members of the Classics County Club and Lely Resort on Marco Island raised money to pay his $3,500 entry fee for the tournament and have put several thousand dollars in an account to help pay for his medical costs.
"Being diagnosed with this stuff, it's a road to you know what, and I will beat it again. I will beat it again," Bierbrauer said.
