NAPLES, Fla. - Fresh off its victory with Trader Joe's the Coalition of Immokalee Workers is turning its focus back to Publix. Dozens of tomato workers and other activists protested in front of the Publix grocery store on Vanderbilt Beach Rd. and US 41 in North Naples.
The CIW is calling on the supermarket giant to sign the Fair Food Agreement which would require the chain to pay an extra penny per pound of tomatoes.
"It would help us work with greater dignity," said Guadalupe Gonzalo, a farm worker who protested in Naples with her son, "it would enable us to buy more food and healthier food for our children."
The protest was supposed to be in front of Trader Joe's, a 40 city nationwide protest was planned and cancelled when the grocer relented and signed the agreement on Thursday. Trader Joe's opened its first store in Southwest Florida on Friday.
"Work in the fields is extremely difficult, especially as a woman we are always sexually harassed," Gonzalo said, "we're not compensated fairly for the work that we do."
In a statement to WINK News, Publix Spokeswoman Shannon Patten says the chain "is more than willing to pay a penny more per pound, or whatever the market price for tomatoes will be in order to provide the goods to our customers."
The emphasis is certainly on "market price" which Publix says it plays no role in setting, instead pointing out that the market price is set by the grower or packer.
"This is a labor dispute and we simply aren't involved," said Patten.
Other chains, including Taco Bell, Burger King, McDonald's and Whole Food have also signed the agreement.
